A wonderfull feature would be the ability to add a person to a 'killfile' with a single click. Anyone
who has used newgroups has likley encountered problem people they would not like
to see messages from. Problem is that it can be a pain to open news filters
put the persons name in and select an option of what to do with their
messages. So how about giving a right click option to
when you select a message subject or body to bring up an opotion
on the right click menu like this
killfile would appear as an expanable option

killfile > add sender to killfile
killfile > add subject to killfile
(or if they highlight a word in the subject) killfile>add sujects containing this word to killfile

I think it would be best to do this on a news group by newsgroup killfile so each one would
have it's own killfile, or perhaps in options you could give the option to have a global killfile
for all newgroups or each one having it's own killfile. Many people would benifit from simply using one
for all and vise versa. also of course the user could go into these filters and remove a killfile for whatever they have it
on at any time if wanted or needed.

Jeff - if you are going to do this enhancement, I'm going to cc: sol and jglick
on this as there is UI impact.

I didn't mean that. No, I don't plan to do that for the near future. Marking it
as REMIND.

I'm going to make this a HELP WANTED bug, since that's how the other enhancement
bugs have been set.

Sounds related to the filtering stuffs we talked about a long time ago. A
"Black List", "White List" and Junk Mail settings. Feature in future release?

Bulk moving all MailNews Security bugs to new Security: General component. The
previous Security component for MailNews will be deleted.

There doesn't appear to be any way to set filters on news messages, but the bug
description says that there is ("...it can be a pain to open news filters
put the persons name in...").

Suggest revising bug description to reflect this. Anyone considering helping
should realize that there's apparently nothing in place now -- even "kill
thread" and "kill author" menu options would be an immeasurable improvement.
Basic "kill thread" and "watch thread" menu items have appeared in the Message
menu. Whee!

Other angles on the feature, as discussed above, remain unaddressed. Is this
being tracked in another bug?
I'd say this feature would come in mighty handy, especially with certain
naysayers on the Mozilla newsgroups. ;-)

fixing this bug could make the newsgroup more effective by allowing many of us
to killfile a certain known individual and focul more on the work at hand.

I suggest some keywords: mozilla0.9.3,UI

It would be nice if someone could take this baby on.
Bug #11036 [Filter by example] would include this feature automagically.
Why isn't the component for this bug "Filters" instead of "Security:General"?
This hardly seems to be a security issue, at least AFAIC.

Over to Filters
Component: Security: General → Filters
David: I got the impression that this bug is for News only, while Bug #11036 is
for mail; so these bugs are different.
Ah, yes. I had not realized that the same filtering was not provided.

Message/Create Filter is disabled in 2002020409?
I'd like the possibility to filter messages on some patterns. Many spamers tend
to use special characters -_.,'!" betwin each letters in ther subjects.
Paterns to check for: alternance of letters and ponctuation, all upercase, chain
of spaces followed by numbers.
This bug depends on the implementation of News filters, adding dependency
Depends on: killfile
Is this dependent on bug 34973?

One feature from Microplanet Gravity News reader: You can set it so that anyone
added to the bozo bin expires after a certain number of days. Useful for
temporarily quashing rather then making it permanent. Whether to make this a
per-server or per blocked user setting is open for debate.

Would an offer of a few hundred $$ to the person who commits this feature
help move it along?

Just curious whether it is not DUPLICATE of bug 11054.

No. Not seeing a particular person regardless of the thread is different from not seeing a (sub)thread regardless of who posted to it.

This could probably also be implemented as an extension.
