Details

Using build 2002041715 on RedHat Linux 7.2 with kernel 2.4.9-31

For one of my IMAP accounts with a number of folders, the message headers appear
to attach them to the message body, so when I view the message I see all the
headers. This isn't the problem...The problem is that the headers aren't
considered to be headers anymore...So the messages shows up in the listing with
no Subject, From or Date (actually the date/time becomes 12/31/1969
7:00PM...presumably a date of "0" with timezone correction from EDT)

This only happens in some folders, and then, only to some messages within those
folders (some folders, for all messages).

It could be that my mailserver is doing something funny, since it delivers
messages directly to certain folders depending on where it came from (different
mailing lists), though no other mail programs seem to have problems (pine,
balsa, horde/IMP). The IMAP server is UW-IMAP-2001a and the MTA is Exim 4.04,
using the mbx mailbox format (in case this helps).

I can attach screenshots, mail spool files and even reconfigure the mail server
if needed...just let me know what needs to be done.
Well, i was using Exim to deliver directly to MBX format mailboxes (setting
mbx_format = true in my exim config file), as opposed to letting dmail or tmail
(from the UW-IMAP Utilities package) do the delivery for me...I have since
converted all the mailboxes from mbx to unix format, then back to mbx format, at
which point Mozilla liked them all again (though once Exim delivered a new
message, that new message was all funky again). I then reconfigured Exim to
deliver everything to tmail which auto-detects mailbox type (...which happens to
be mbx in all cases) and delivers from there. Everything is all good now.

It seems, the obvious problem is Exim delivering directly to mbx format
mailboxes. The one catch here is that Pine, Balsa and Horde/IMP all have no
problem with the funky mailboxes that Exim produces, only Mozilla has trouble,
which leads me to believe that perhaps Mozilla is being a little stricter than
other software?

You can all decide if this should therefore qualify as a bug or not.

I am also gonna present this problem to the Exim mailing list.
yes, it looks like we're being stricter about lines ending with CRLF.

I haven't heard any more reports of this, and the server was generating invalid protocol anyway...
