User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.1) Gecko/20020826 Build Identifier: Mozilla 1.2.1 With Mozilla 1.2.1 I now find that pressing "Get Msgs" in the mail program often causes a complege hang. This didn't happen for me in 1.1 The hang doesn't happen everytime but frequently enough to make 1.2.1 useless for me. My mail setup uses movemail on a Linux box. This bug may be related to 131599 (but that was reported before 1.2.1 whereas I had no problems until 1.2.1) Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. On Linux system setup to use movemail 2. Press "Get Msgs" 3. Actual Results: In a significant fraction of cases the program will "freeze" (i.e. everything stops responding. Expected Results: Retrieved mail!
Are you using a compatible theme? If you delete XUL.mfl (found in your profile directory) *before* starting 1.2, does the bug still happen? (Asking because i notice your agent string indicates you may be sharing a profile with 1.1, which can likely cause some problems)
Summary: In mozilla 1.2.1 pressing "Get Msgs" button in mail often causes hang → In mozilla 1.2.1 pressing "Get Msgs" button in mail often causes hang
I switched back to 1.1 and reported the bug using that. That's why some things may appear to be incompatible. Never had mail problems in the past though when changing/upgrading between different versions of mozilla.

I am seeing the same problem but have more info to add: - Yes, the lock up happens when hitting "get messages" - However, you do not know that until you click on "inbox" which causes the hourglass to appear. There is no new email downloaded. - You could click on some other mailbox and it seems to be fine except you still do not get any new email, and clicking back on Inbox brings the hourglass back again. - Yes, it is intermittent, but frequent enough - I noticed, it can lock up *without* hitting "get messages". It is much harder to produce but it does happen. In that case, selecting "inbox" in one of my accounts is good enoug to cause it. It has never happened when hitting other mailboxes, i.e. other than "inbox". But no pariticular account seemed any more vulnerable than the other. - The workaround is to close email client *and* *all* browser windows. Email alone does not do. Then it could be started again and it works (until the next lockup). System info: - RH-8.0 with 1.2.1 installed out of Mozilla RPMs. - Using Orbit 3+1 theme for 1.2 (probably irrelevant) - I have 5 email accounts configured - All accounts are configured to *not* automatically download new mail - All accounts are POP, no security settings - The remote POP server is Eudora qpopper 4.0.4 (tarball) - All mailboxes are saved to subdirectories under ~/. - The home directories are NFS mounted onto a RH-7.2 machine - The previous installation, original RH-8.0 with Mozilla 1.0.1, *also* exhibited the same problem but much less frequently. Thanks, you guys are doing a fabulous job!!!
reassigning qa. didn't see this with a imap or pop acccount (netscape mesg server 4.15) using Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.3a) Gecko/20021205 on linux 2.2

Just FYI, this is the movemail we're referring to: http://www.mozilla.org/mailnews/movemail/

Can see this with 1.3b on a movemail account. Could it be, that this happens when Mozilla tries to read the spool while it is locked by another program, e.g. fetchmail?

Was this bug fixed? I (original reporter of this bug) am now using Mozilla 1.3 with no problems so far.

Can see a slightly different behavour now (1.3 and 1.4a). When pressing "GetMsgs", Mozilla does not freeze, but the cursor changes to the hour glass and no messages are received. This behavour stays until I restart mozilla. It happens sometimes, not always.

Sorry for spamming, this is the behaviour described in comment #5. Didn't read this first. So: This bug is not fixed as of 1.4a and movemail.

I can confirm that it happens as in comment #11 with a POP account on both Jakarta Apache James (intranet) and the account of aisaindustries.it. Using Mozilla 1.4 Beta Build 20033050714 on W2k and also on W98. I see "There are no new messages on server", but the moz logo is running, no mail is recieved, and clicking again on GET Messages nothing changes. I have to restart the whole set of Mozilla windows. I'm using the standard Mozilla modern theme.

Can see this also with pressing Ctrl+T. Suggesting summary change as of comment 11 & 13: "Receiving Messages often causes mail to hang (movemail?)" Nicola, are you sure, that you don't use movemail?

I'm sure. I send mail with Postcast Server and other computers on my intranet that have the same problem use Apache Jakarta James, all over SMTP. To recieve mail we use Apache Jakarta James with POP3 and another server of our provider that I don't know (interbusiness.it) One thing though: we all have antiviruses for mail. I use PCCillin, and others use Symantech Antivirus. These stay in the background and filter all incoming messages. Dunno if it's relevant. Anyway, I can confirm that this bug has occurred to me with all Mozillas at least from 1.2.1 Note: I support too the change of the subject, but without "(movemail?)"

We are still seeing behaviour as described in comment #11 in mozilla 1.5. This is with mozilla running on redhat linux 7.3, using movemail to get mail from a spool that is nfs served from another redhat 7.3 system. I have several users using this setup. Only one routinely sees the problem. The only relevant distinguishing feature of that account that have been able to find so far is that the mozilla inbox is large, nearly 350MB.

Same as in comment #11. this has been happening once every few days (I keep mozilla open for long periods) for a long time now, I am using 1.7 and it just showed up again. My setup is nothing special at all, normal pop3, single account, low number of incoming emails. One thing in common with the rest is that my .mozilla dir is NFS'd but mozilla does not freeze nor do I ever get disk-wait status on mozilla processes, so I have no reason to suspect this is NFS related. Thanks!

The "movemail" in the title should be removed as there are people reporting it for POP3 too.
