More data- re-install of 1.4b after failure of 1.4rc1 also fails the same way; reboot does not help. Then I did a complete uninstall of 1.4b, and reinstall - this came up. Then ran 1.4rc1 install, and it worked. The major complication I know about in my environment that was uninstalled by the removal was my redirection of various registry keys to a different location. I install my mozilla in d:\Program Files, and keep all my profile data in d:\Documents and Settings instead of c:\documents and settings. The working re-installed versions use c:\documents and settings. After some fixups with about:config, things seem to work for me on rc1 now.

You must always install in a clean empty directory if you get problems and/or if you had installed addons -> wfm (works after clean install)

While you -should- install in clean directory, many people do not. This is the first time it's broken for me as I've installed on top of 0.9.5 on though 1.4. It may need additional emphasis in the release notes.

What is a "clean directory"? Do you have to completely (manually) delete every little leftover from a previous installation or is a normal uninstall enough? I did a normal uninstall (and reboot) before I installed rc1, and I think thats the way I've been doing it since the relases was called milestone Mxx. After uninstalling rc1 the normal way (no manual deleting) I reinstalled 1.3.1 again, and it works fine. Also if I was going to manually delete every leftover, wouldn't I loose some settings or installed plugins?

I don't know how clean clean means - probably just the program files directory is important. When I did my uninstall/install, my data from documents and settings was untouched, so the uninstall doesn't clobber user profile data.

Doesn't the uninstall program do that ("Add/Remove programs")? As I said, I used
the uninstall program, and even did a reboot before installing 1.4rc1. As I also
said, that is the way I've been doing it for ages without problems.

Matti set this bug to "works for me" very quickly, without putting himself on the CC-list to receive further comments. I hope its ok that I'm reopening the bug. I don't really believe I have to do a *manual* cleanup when uninstalling. Using the uninstall program should be enough?

I just had the same problem. Un-installing mozilla and re-installing in the same directory did not work for me. And I can confirm that many people do not install into a clean directory. :-) It is very surprising to install RC and it crashes immediately ... I guess it's also a duplicate of bug 203479.

Crashing for me in Windows 98 after. Went back to 1.3.1 all is fine. This is a bug guys, not a feature!

I also had the crash on Win98. I uninstalled and removed the c:\program files\mozilla.org dir, and now it works. But I'm getting very much blue screens and mozilla hanging, I think i'm going back to 1.4b, it's much more stable :-) Or means clean install delete the profiles dir too? I think that isn't funny for keeping my mails...

Same here. Except with me it is Windows ME, fully updated. Which I suppose you could call W98 3rd Ed. I started with a Clean install. Oddly, I just had 1.4b on here a couple weeks ago from a Daily compile that worked great. Something has changed in the couple of weeks since 1.4b to RC1 that caused this problem. I did note that the file size of the older dll was larger than this new one. 476kb, I think vs 455kb, if that helps.
