Reported by ZorbaTHut at http://www.kuro5hin.org/comments/2004/1/31/125914/125/114

ZorbaTHut likes to replace his webcomic bookmarks after catching up with the
comic, so that each bookmark always points to the last strip he had read. In IE
he can do that by bookmarking the new URL and selecting "replace" when IE tells
him there is already a bookmark with that name.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Add a bookmark.
2. Add a bookmark with the same name in the same folder. The URL can be the
same or different. (Ctrl+D, drag proxy icon to personal toolbar.)

Result: two bookmarks with the same name in the same folder.
Expected: dialog with at least "Replace" and "Cancel" buttons. (Maybe also a
"Rename" button or a "Keep both" button.)

See also bug 10272, "Replace last bookmark".
it seems that the old bug report is from 2001, and still isn't fixed. I also
really like to overwrite bookmarks. This bug has my vote.

I agree, bookmarks should not be duplicated in this way, I can't think of many
cases where I'd like to have exactly the same name for more than one bookmark..
it would make finding the one you want a nightmare!

If the user is prompted with the option to replace or cancel I think that would
be a big improvement..
shoudn't this bug get some +'es so it will be fixed in 1.0? imo this is a
annoying bug. look, when i post something on a forum, it has a #number after it
so i can see what the last response was when i posted, so normally i should only
bookmark it agian and it will get overwritten, now, i have to remove the old
one, and then bookmark it. I don't see why there should be a posibility to have
bookmarks with the same name.
because if you have lots of bookmarks, you might have the same bookmark under
different groups/folders, and making this work the way you're suggesting

Note that this was deliberately implemented, and I would consider it unlikely
that we're going to change this any time soon. I could see this as an option,
but I would consider it very unlikely that this will change before 1.0.
But what if it simply checks if that bookmark exists in the folder you are
saving it in? Just when you try to save a bookmark that already exist, some
dialog like this appears:

A bookmark with that name already exists in this folder.

           [Overwrite] [Add anyway] [Cancel]

that way, everybody is happy...
I'm not happy, because dialogs suck and no one reads them.

Anyway, unless someone comes up with a safe and stable patch, this won't make 1.0.
Flags: blocking-aviary1.1?
IE 6 shows a dialog, with yes being the default:

The name you have entered for the shortcut already exists on your Favorites
menu. Would you like to overwrite it?

[ Yes ] [ No ]
I don't know why I didn't pull the trigger on this a long time ago, but this
isn't going to change.

Well, it doesn´t have to be a new dialog.
Maybe a solution that doesn´t involve a new dialog would be acceptable?
