From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.75 [en] (Win95; U)
BuildID:

Mozilla freezes upon starting the application via mozilla.exe, and attempts at
re-importation of my 4.0 profile and profile management itself though the
-installer and -profilemanager switches do no good either. The only thing that
can be done at this point is a CTRL-ALT-DEL and closing the app through Task
Manager. As far as I can tell, the only time that Mozilla M17 or M18 have ever
run on the specific machine I'm using it on has been immediately after
installation of the program via the Windows installer. In fact, as I type this,
it's frozen as a background process and not responding. The other stuff I have
loaded into memory at the moment are SETI@home, Norton Antivirus 2000, PGPtray,
Microsoft Global IME, ZoneAlarm firewall, speedkey (Microsoft keyboard driver),
and em_exec (Logitech mouse driver). I've not had this problem with M16 and
prior, but M17 and M18 seem to do this every time.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
Pretty simple. It's simply running Mozilla without running
mozilla-win32-installer-M18.exe and reinstalling the program each time I want to
use it.

Actual Results: The system shows a "working in background" icon for about
thirty seconds, then continues as though Mozilla was never selected from the
menu. Calling up Task Manager, Mozilla shows up as nearly dead last on the
applications list (with only the Microsoft keyboard driver being lower).

Expected Results: I think that this should be obvious.

On my Windows 98 box, which has a nearly identical configuration, I have no
problems. The only real differences are the operating system (the problematic
one is running Windows ME, as noted above) and video card (the Win98 box has a
Voodoo 3 3500, the one with problems a GeForce 2 with Detonator drivers).
Dan Tanaree, are you still seeing this with a current nightly builds. Have you
deleted your old profiles and your mozregistry.dat file? Have you tried the
zipped build (just unzip it to a directory and run mozilla.exe from there)?
Have you tried closing some of those other items that are running?
Yes, I went through all of those suggestions already. I thought that
the Mozilla registry was the problem at first, and so deleted and
rebuilt it several times; this did nothing, so I tried the zipped build
- this doesn't run as well, to a degree. This has the same symptoms as
the installer build - hanging and inactivity, but it'll run exactly
_once_. After this, I have to unzip a different build (usually I try
one of the nightlies, but about 75% of those won't load even once) on
top and use the -installer switch to re-import my 4.0 profile before
it'll run again, again only once. I've also tried hiding my 4.0 and 5.0
profiles by moving them to my other computer, then deleting the Mozilla
registry and getting it to restart normally, and which point it again
won't load. This is likely not a memory corruption issue, as I've tried
cold restarts with it not working (having first cleared the registry and
profiles, of course) and yielded no results. Is there anywhere else
that Mozilla writes to? I've also unloaded all but the most essential
Windows elements (Explorer) before running to try to rule out a program
conflict - this problem stays with that, as well. I've noticed that
Windows hides some TSRs from the Task Manager, but I think I got them
all with a selective startup. Could it be an issue with my system only?
Dan, it sounds like it is something specific to your setup but that doesn't mean
it won't bite a lot of other folks. Have you tried running either PR2 or PR3
from Netscape?
I can't seem to download PR3 - the download of the first component always times
out, regardless of when I try to connect. PR2, however, doesn't seem to have
any problems other than complete instability compared to Mozilla.
coudl you try a new recent build (post m18)?
In respose to Mr. Rosenburg's query -

I've just tried the 11/5 nightly; no good. I get the same symptoms as for
M18. Something new I'd noticed - I had deleted one of the older nightlies
(10/30, I think) to install the 11/5 _while it was running_ (it not doing
anything, and I had forgotten that it was still sitting in the background
stalled), and Windows didn't complain about any of the Mozilla files being in
use. Checking, Windows still lists Mozilla as a thread running at the bottom
of the priority list in Task Manager.
Dan Tanaree, if you end this process, remove your mozilla profiles and your
mozregistry.dat and then launch mozilla what happens? Have you tried different
command line arguments like running mozilla.exe -installer or -profilemanager or
-mail ?
Same thing as if I reinstalled it - I had mentioned this once already in my
initial post. -installer, -profilemanager, and -mail arguments result in the
same as a regular start - the program hangs after around 30 seconds of showing a
"busy" mouse icon (and nothing else - no "Mozilla" startup screen) and then sits
at the bottom of Task Manager.
I assume you have a msvcrt.dll file...so, could you try without the firewall
program?
I've already tried that - if you recall, I had mentioned that I had tried a
completely clean restart before. Everything that wasn't needed to run was
disabled via selective startup before a cold restart.
please see the steps i took to triage bug 59554. If you can repeat them I can
probably triage this bug.

One step before you do that, please try running viewer.exe (and when you get a
new build you can also try winEmbed.exe) the output and overall results would
be useful [eg, viewer runs, winembed hangs). you can also try the other exe's
in the bin directory, but those two would be the first i'd want to know about.
URL: N/A
It definitely isn't msvcirt.dll, as I have that already.

Viewer.exe crashes on gxhtml.dll; the "Example 0 - Raptor"
menu appears, but the DOS box that loads prior to that reports
"nsNativeComponentLoader: GetFactory(C:\Progra~1\mozilla\bin\
components\rdf.dll) Load FAILED with error: error 31" anywhere
from six to a dozen times before the program causes a GPF with
the aforementioned DLL.
Winembed.exe crashes in a similar fashion, except for
chrome.dll instead.

Here's a dump of a FileMon log of Mozilla starting up
(simply replace all instances of "SeaMonkey" with "bin"
for the most recent build):

Dan Tanaree, can you try one thing more. Can you make sure that the component
registry is deleted should live somewhere like this
C:\WINNT\Profiles\user\Application Data\Mozilla\registry.dat and then try a
current talkback zipped build.
I've just tried deletion of registry.dat with the most recent nightly - no go.
I'm getting similar crashes from viewer.exe and winembed.exe as last time, as
well (see comments three entries up). Mozilla isn't even bothering to recreate
the file this time, from what I can tell. I'm still thinking that the odd thing
is that it runs fine on my Win98 box...
Something new with the most recent (0.6) build: Mozilla will now run exactly
_once_ for each cold start. After that, all symptoms mentioned in the above
thread for this bug (56581) return.
Marking NEW...I know its a questionable but we need an engineer to look at it.
It has a lot of good information too.

I too am plaged by this bug. I have build 2000121104 as retreived from the zip
file nightly. I experience the bug in a slightly different manner but ONLY
under Windows ME as seems to be the case in previous entries.

Starting from a fresh boot, I can launch Mozilla without incident. However,
after launching a few other programs (IE, SecureCRT, ICQ and maybe ServU FTP)
and then closing Mozilla, I can not get it (Mozilla) to restart. Even if I
close all programs, Mozilla will not restart. Only a warm or cold boot of the
machine will allow a restart of Mozilla.

Symptoms: As has been previously mentioned, I too see the "busy" icon for a few
moments and then no program is launched, and the cursor returns to it's normal
state. A CTRL-ALT-DEL also shows me an instance of Mozilla at dead last in the
task/program menu list. An attempt to shut down the program with "End Task" is
sucessfull but any further attempts to launch Mozilla result in the same behavor.

Further notes: I have not yet tried any of the solutions listed above, but will
be post haste. (This is my first bugzilla report, so I'm just learning :)
If you need a bit more information on this bug, I just tried Mozilla 0.7 out.
Like 0.6, it will run once, then start manifesting the bug (busy icon then
load halts under WinME). I've made sure on all attempts I've listed, BTW, that
Mozilla was NOT running in the background in subsequent executions to make sure
that this isn't just a reprise of 50424. Does WinME handle memory allocation
differently than previous versions? As nothing in the settings seems to affect
this bug, all appropriate files are accessed correctly upon startup, and
multiple uses renders bug appearance more likely, I would guess that it's an
issue with memory corruption of some sort in ME (but I've only been a
programming student for a few years, so I'm certainly no expert). In addition,
if you recall, I've had no problems on my Win98 box (similar config to my WinME
box). I've also recently tried 0.7 on an (ancient) Pentium 166 running Win95
for the hell of it, and the bug doesn't manifest there either (though it
certainly does run much more slowly, as is to be expected).
Could this be related to bug 64939, where Mozilla fails to start after re-install?
Summary: Mozilla re-install deletes the 'chrome' dir in the 'bin' dir, but the
'chrome' preferences in the profile still point to a previously installed, but
now removed chrome.
Check the following: remove the 'chrome' dir in your profile, and try to start
Mozilla, if it starts then this is indeed related to this chrome bug.
I was also experiencing this bug.
Windows ME.
Mozilla ID: 2001011104
It had been occuring on my system since at least mid December.
I had removed mozver.dat and mozreg and the profile but that didn't fix it. I
would see the splash screen the first time I ran Mozilla from a restart but
nothing after that. ctrl-alt-del would mozilla running last and after end
tasking it every other time I ran mozilla I would see nothing except the pointer
with an hourglass.

I then deleted all occurences moz from my registry and restarted. This seemed
to fix it. I am able to open and close mozilla numerous times with no problems.
Responses to two of the recent posts on this bug:
Concerning the comment from cbowman, this seems to act a bit differently. The
Mozilla logo doesn't even appear upon running the EXE. Completely purging the
Registry of Mozilla references doesn't seem to affect this (unless I restart, in
which case it would start working again anyway).
In response to akayser, deletion of the chrome dir doesn't seem to allow a
restart. Again, busy icon for about thirty secs, then nothing.
My comments were premature. I apologize. I was able to open and close mozilla
for a few minutes after restarting but I can't even get it to open now. I do
not get a splash screen.
I can find no pattern to it. So I am back to experiencing the same problems as
Dan Tanaree.
Could it be related to a certain architecture?
my system is an Athlon Thunderbird 800 on an Asus A7V MB with Mushkin PC133
Rev2 RAM if that helps any.

Let me know if I can provide any other information.
I tried some more stuff:
I was able to open viewer and winembed for about as long after a reboot as I
was mozilla, after the time is up I get WinEmbed has caused an error in
docshell.dll and viewer does the same in cookie.dll

I will attach a file monitor log of what happens when mozilla opens first and
then another one where it doesn't
I noticed when mozilla won't open ole32.dll and shlwapi.dll are replaced with
mousemgr.dll in the filemonitor log.

The descrepency starts in line 218 when moz opens and in 242 when it doesn't in
the attached files to follow.
Just to add to the confusion : bug 65323 reports the same thing. the reporter
was able to start Mozilla by deleting everything and creating a new profile though.
For the developers : Clearly something has been messed in the profiles during a
given period (just before M17?). I guess this is not a big problem but still...
There was a problem with two builds installed in the same directory. I can't
remember the bug number, but racham and I fixed it a while ago.
