Right now, at least on mac, there is no way to save the text of a page (not the
html, just the text). SaveAs saves the HTML. Since patching NavServices isn't
very simple (l10n issues, etc), how about another menu item "Save As Text" and
rename saveAs to "Save As Source".

How cluttered could that be? Not being able to save the text of a page sucks,
and i'd bet that 99% of users want the text, not the source (what's html?). How
about making "save as" save the text, and if they want source, they can copy it
out of the "view source" window? That'll keep things uncluttered, yet still
allow the geeks that want the source access.
Bug 42441 suggests that this be an option in the Save As... dialog. Mozilla
Composer has this option already, although it doesn't work right now
(bug 51798).

Reopening, the problem with the dialogs is that nav services patching is
*hard*.

It's not hard at all, it just needs someone to spend the time to write the code.

Instead of having a separate item under "file" for "Save as Text", why not
follow the lead of most other applications and have an arrow pointing out from
"Save As", with the sub options of "HTML" or "Text" or <etc.>. For those that
use Save As Text a lot, maybe they can add a keyboard shortcut to it (maybe
something like control-shift-T).
"Reopening, the problem with the dialogs is that nav services patching is
*hard*."

I'm not sure what you mean by "nav services patching", but this IS a duplicate
of bug 42441, because that bug describes the correct and generally agreed upon
way to implement the save as text UI. If there is some reason we need to have
this in the file menu itself, then we can reopen this after the other one is
fixed. Just because it's *hard*, is no excuse not to do it *right*. ;)
