User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:21.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/21.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20130511120803

Steps to reproduce:

Firefox 20.0.1 and 21.0 for Linux, 64 bit
Scientific Linux 6.4 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4), 64 bit
Xfce 4.8

Would one of our intrepid heroes please fix this for me?

Twice so far twice today, and usually once a day, opening a link from Thunderbird (17.0.5 and 20b2) will freeze up my entire computer: no keystroke(s) work and the mouse is frozen. It is not restricted to links in Thunderbird either. Clicking on a book mark or link in FF will do it too, but far less often. The freeze up is not restricted to any particular URL. After a reboot the same link will work perfectly too. The only way I can recover from the freeze up it to press the magic one fingered reset button.

Many thanks,
-T
Thanks for taking the time to report this!
Please follow the steps on http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Firefox%20crashes and report back here. Thanks!

From the link you sent me: "A crash is what happens when Firefox closes or quits unexpectedly. After a crash, you should see the Mozilla Crash Reporter appear."

This does not apply to me as my whole computer freezes up. <ctrl><alt><back space> doesn't even work. And I never get a crash reporter. Firefox is causing the OS to freeze. A real feet, as this is Linux.

But the article did mention try running it in safe mode. Next big office day, I will give it a spin. (All my plugins are updated.)

Here is something stronger than Ctrl+Alt+Backspace: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key#Uses
hasn't crashed since we last spoke. Had a kernel update though
Okay, ff21 froze up the entire computer one more time trying to open a a link from Thunderbird 22b2. I was not in safe more. I am now testing FF22. Also not in safe more.

reproduced with ff22
Hi Todd, it is hard for us to reproduce this issue without more information. The reason for testing in safe mode is to make sure the issue is actually a bug in Firefox rather than in an add-on. Is there anything in about:crashes or about:memory that you could attach that might give a clue to the problem?

Hi Liz,

FF is now on 23.0.01 and "about:crashes" is completely empty. TH is now on 23.0 beta. This issue has now reappeared in at least two weeks. So, maybe it is fixed. I will get back it is happens again. I have also had another kernel update.

Just happened again. FF was not running. This is the link in Thunderbird I clicked on:
http://sourceforge.net/p/icopy/bugs/232/#b8ea

FF opened up. The page did not load. "about:crashes" is again, empty. The entire computer froze up, except the mouse. All the <Alt><fx> key were frozen too. I doubt anything had a chance to write to anything.

The problem with running in safe mode, is that it takes about a month to reproduce.

about:crashes is useful only if you send a crash report using the crashreporter program that Firefox starts when it crashes.
Summary: freeze opening link from thunderbird → system hang/freeze opening link from thunderbird
Whiteboard: [bugday-20131021]
Now on to 28.0.0, 64 bit for Linux.
Scientific Linux 6.5, 64 bit
$ uname -r
2.6.32-431.11.2.el6.x86_64

Had as freeze up when just clicking on the Firefox Icon. So Thunderbird is not implicated.
Mouse pointer works, but nothing else. <ctrl> <alt> <f1 and f2> do not respond. And, there is nothing is "about:crashes" as this bugs hoses the entire operating system, which is saying something when dealing with Linux.

This is causing a lot of havoc on my system. Can you guys please take a look at it?

Many thanks,

I am not sure exactly how I am suppose to do that. The ENTIRE machine freezes up. There are no logs, no traces, NOTHING.

Update:
Now on to 36.0.1, 64 bit for Linux.
Scientific Linux 6.6, 64 bit

On the bright side, I haven't had a freeze up since the one with 28.0.0

oi, I missed that. Thanks for the update. And if your computer hangs then you've go more going on then just an application problem. Probably a bad device driver or some bit of hardware
