(I've marked this All/All, but that probably excludes Mac Classic.) Mozilla crashes from time to time. Sadly, that problem isn't going away soon. It isn't nice if file downloads go down with the browser. That's why externalizing downloads to other processes would be useful. When I initiate a larger download, I copy the URL from Mozilla and then fetch the file with wget. It would be nice to have an option that would make Mozilla do this for me.
Are the file download problems described in other bugs? Oddly, this is similar to what I asked for in bug 92719, except you are confining your application of the feature to just file downloads.

Henri - Good idea, but I don't see this happening soon. If you want, play around the TestPageLoad, which is basically a wget using Necko (no UI). It is available in the necko test directory: http://lxr.mozilla.org/mozilla/source/netwerk/test/TestPageLoad.cpp -> dougt, for now.
