The key bit here are newer email standards like DKIM, SPF, and authenticated Submission-SMTP / SMTP AUTH. They mean that the demanded solution here *does not work*. It may happen to work on *your* particular server, but not for other users. If we build a feature into Thunderbird, it must work for everybody, not just some people. For special needs, indeed an extension / add-on is better. Onno Ekker, if you think that your solution is needed, I think it's indeed best for you to re-surrect the your extension and build it as WebExtension. Apart from that: What Magnus said.
