Right, I see what you're saying and it makes sense, but at this point I'm not sure what else I could do. For the GTK theme attempt, I followed the instructions in https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2017/05/ubuntus-default-gtk-theme-now-looks-better-gnome-shell. Could it be possible that the step of redefining the test parameter for the newer GTK theme in Debian 10 has to be taken, given that Ubuntu 16.04 and its Ambiance theme won't be around forever?
