* Either an extension that aims to block auto-refresh globally, or on specific sites. I haven't found any; [Stop Auto Reload](https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/stop-auto-reload/) doesn't seem fit for purpose.
* A user script manager like [Violentmonkey](https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/violentmonkey/) and a user script. You can look for one on [GreasyFork](https://greasyfork.org) and [OpenUserJS](https://openuserjs.org) and if one doesn't exist, make a request in the forum there.
* A content blocker like [uBlock Origin](https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/) or script blocker like [YesScript2](https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/yesscript2/). This approach would likely cause other features of the site to stop working.

I browsed around lemonde.fr a bit and I didn't come across any 301 or 302 server response.

It occurred to me that if the issue is with background tabs, you could suspend them. There are multiple extensions that can do this, like [Total Suspender](https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/total-suspender/) • [New Tab Suspender](https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-suspender/) • [Tab Suspender](https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/ff-tab-suspender/) • [Tab Suspender](https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/tab-suspender-extension/) • [Freeze, Tab Suspender](https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/freeze-tab-suspender/).
