See https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/hmtm72/help_or_feature_request_is_it_possible_to_display/ and bug 1191591 Given that Firefox now opens PDFs by default in Windows, Firefox ought to be a better platform citizen by showing users the file type that is represented by icons in users' file managers in their native platform. Currently, Firefox seems to have a single icon for all documents, but there is clearly a difference between a PDF or a HTML document, or even an image; depending on the file, a user may want to open the file in a different viewer - even if they want the default viewer to be Firefox. Given that Windows hides file extensions by default, users will look to the icon for this affordance.
