We don't have telemetry about this, thus I can't rell you how much .local is used, or even just expected. My gut feeling is that one should type it explicitly, but it may be worth to check we're not breaking an expected flow; did you test what the other browsers are doing? Chromium is doing an identical dns request for these words, are they also querying for .local?
