Seems like the error Nils sees would be consistent and not just when new mail arrives? But maybe worth checking.
I copied 5000 message to a deep imap folder on dovecot server. It tooks some times and messages were being continuously "delivered" via imap append but I see no problems at all. I could access any messages with messages coming in and getting download from the server with no problem.
