Thanks L, that's a worthwhile idea, on record as Bug 286888 for the default. It's already possible to make it automatic. We've improved the prompt for TB 91 to mitigate the confusion. Prompt also now has a link to documentation. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/compacting-folders, which also shows to make it automatic if you wish.
