Autodeleting them after the fact would not help for this as the damage would already be done. On a modern SSD, write cycles really aren't that big a deal anymore - and even if they are, unless you're downloading tens of hundreds of files for every single HTML page you browse to, downloads aren't likely to be the biggest cause of writes here (compared to say, disk cache, and sqlite databases with cookies, and session restore databases, etc. etc.). > I'd very much prefer the ability to at least change the directory these files are saved at least, You can adjust the default downloads directory, just as before. > Also, where would Firefox save these files to if I have the "Always ask where to save files" option selected? Initially, the default downloads directory, then moved to the location of your choice (Firefox will prompt, cf. bug 1738916). > I just downloaded Nightly to try and see what it does but I can't even get the "open with or save file" dialog to even pop up, it jumps to asking the location to save the file immediately, or if I do have the "Save files to" option selected it just goes and downloads the file immediately, even on things like the install button on Firefox's Flathub page for example (which works as I expected on my Firefox 94.0.1 install from the Arch Linux repos). The Nightly version I got was 96.0a1 (2021-11-18), and I'm on Arch Linux. This all sounds like expected behaviour to me. Full details about the changes are in [this public doc](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1H0Uw7oNgATAN1Ji_MYj7loaY_H-GUmnkNKvwraeHWgQ/edit#). You can alter your per-filetype preferences as before in the Firefox settings/preferences, and can go back to "always ask" (the dialog) behaviour there, or set files to open immediately etc. etc. If a filetype doesn't show up there, you can change that by right clicking a download entry for that filetype in the downloads panel or library, and clicking "always open similar files" in the relevant context menu.
