/tmp is a folder on a volume on a drive. Actually, Firefox lets you choose which folder they go to via the path selector in about:preferences. And now, as of this change, it actually uses that folder when you choose "Open" instead of "Save file." Previously, it just wrote everything in /tmp irrespective of user preferences, and then only moved it after the fact (and didn't move it at all if you chose "Open"). The previous comments in this thread already clear up these misconceptions and explain the current situation, FYI.

> There is a change. Before this was introduce I didn't have to lift a finger. I download a bunch of pdf files daily and I open them in Okular. I never intend to keep any of them. I didn't have to do a thing. Now? Now I have to keep tracking all the files and keep deleting them from my drive… every day… again and again. Were I a fluent English speaker I'd have found a better word to describe it, I'm not so I'm calling it stupid.

That's right, but none of that has any bearing on privacy or user permissions. The previous behavior was convenient for some Windows and Linux users, but it had a risk of download failure as well as unexpected data loss. What has changed is a matter of convenience, not privacy. Martin V is just trying to explain how your previous comment was a bit hyperbolic or melodramatic.

> The sad thing is that Firefox keeps getting worse to use. They waste time on this kind of "improvements" when the browser can't playback videos any more. If users report bugs they're closed as WONTFIX or labelled as advocacy and hidden.

So what's the issue, downloads or video playback? If you have an actual problem with video playback you should be posting a new bug report about that. If it's so obvious to you the right way to improve Firefox, then why don't you submit a patch?

Where we're at right now (you'd know if you had read any of the previous comments) is trying to find technical solutions to the problems that make it difficult to use the Temp folder, and make it difficult to expose this concisely as a user preference. Everyone is aware that many users are frustrated by losing this "feature," but that doesn't help to write a patch.
