> _"prefer display name" should be the default for collected addresses, as it was in practice before the bug was fixed_

I was about to file a bug requesting a user-pref to control the default setting of `Prefer display name over message header`, because if I am not mistaken, currently users who don't want this, have to uncheck the checkbox on every newly created contact, no ? I am probably mistaken ... but that only goes to show that _"this unique option for each vcard […] is definitely confusing"_ (comment #6).

But if you all agree anyway, that _"having a checkbox preference that affects individual contacts overwriting a global preference is a very strange and inconsistent approach"_ (comment #4) and the per-contact checkbox will be removed (_"Remove the PreferDisplayName individual property from the contacts"_, comment #9), then the point of what this checkbox should default to is obviously also moot, fortunately.

I'm happy for the checkbox on the contact cards to be removed, because it's a burden to ponder whether it is set correctly upon the creation of each new contact, let alone the burden of correcting/harmonizing past mistakes.

On the other hand, I agree that it hurts to lose the ability to display [senders with changing display name](https://thunderbird.topicbox.com/groups/planning/Tec65c7b3d9001140-Mfae7d0816edfec951eef604b/intention-to-deprecate-prefer-display-name-for-single-contact-in-address-book) (github notifications, etc.) which would require some sort of exception. I don't have a bright idea yet. How to allow for such an exception without affecting all other contacts ?

Maybe it's a good idea to remove the checkbox on the contact cards, because it's a burden to ponder whether it is set correctly upon the creation of each new contact, let alone the burden of correcting/harmonizing past mistakes.

I have created bug 1898896 as a place to collect ideas for how to best replace this per-contact checkbox.
