You're right! I send a long message (about 18M) which keeps the sending progress dialog open long enough to hit cancel (or escape) and the message still gets sent after the progress dialog goes away. Then after the message is sent, the dialog about saving to Local Folders appears. Retry doesn't work (just brings the dialog right back up) and Save also doesn't work (just re-opens progress dialog and makes no progress). Then when I click Cancel on progress dialog, I'm back to the compose window with "Copy failed" in the status bar (as Richard sees).

Another interesting thing about this is that canceling (or escaping) the smtp send doesn't work and the message is still sent. That bug was noticed (by me) a while back and was supposed to be fixed here: Bug 1816540. But now it seems be not working again due to a regression (to be determined).
