Richard, good point about laptop trackpads which don't have an explicit middle button, so using Bug 1661438 is tricky for them. I guess you could always connect a 3-button mouse if you really need that. Many trackpads also allow emulating the middle button (similar to emulating the right button), e.g. as 3-finger-tap.

Yes, extra icons on hover is another way. Makes the UI more nervous. Error-prone if delete icon suddenly appears under your mouse where before you'd see just a plain pill which you want to select; we had that in TB68 on the recipient type selector and users hated that. But there are other ways of "reveal-on-hover", outside the pill, like to the right (overlapping the *next* pill which you have *not* clicked), or below. As Alex said, we cannot explore the details here, needs another bug.
