ok so after some reading and testing I've determined that shadow expansion is a red herring here. The real issue is that overflow:hidden things like the edge of the screen are ~reasonably incorporated in the calculation of the text's bounds (or perhaps clip_rect?), but this breaks down when we offset those bounds by the shadow's size. See here an unblurred "fast shadow" which is badly cutoff because it's just translating the edge of the window.
