Thanks to everyone who contributed! It looks like these problems only appear on systems with an Intel HD 3000 GPU. Now that we have a machine with that GPU and can reproduce the problem, I will try to find a workaround. I'm still interested in hearing from people who 1) have an Intel HD 3000 and do *not* see the problem, and from people who 2) have something that's *not* an Intel HD 3000 and *do* see the problem.
