So, working backwards here: How does you machine talk to the server? Meaning, is your machine and the server on a switch and sharing traffic? Is the server behind any hard/soft firewall? What about disabling any Antivirus in case it's the type that acts as a proxy for incoming / outgoing mail scanning? Just thinking out loud about any potential software or network topology issues that could be at play.
