This meta-bug tracks the work required to create a minimal implementation of requestAutocomplete that can be used on a demo website, hidden behind an about:config preference.

This work does not necessarily include the storage back-end and can start with just two or three fields.

What happened last June/July? As far as I can tell this is our only viable path towards better payments on the web. Seems super critical to get this out there and then iterate on this feature.

I believe this has been put on hold for lack of available developers and the presence of higher priorities. You may want to talk to Gavin or Chad if you have any questions.

Definitely! :-) I don't know how this relates to our team's current priorities, but the feature it's aimed to provide is very important especially for devices with small screens or where typing is more difficult, and I get this can be an area of particular interest for your home team.
