Pros :
- Integrates better into the platform (especially useful for high contrast and the iconic context menu)
- Better scaling across dpis
- Easily customizable (text-shadow, font-size, color, ...)

Cons : 
- A bit harder to maintain
- Might be perf heavy
- Bad text display on some platforms

I think it's unlikely that we'd do this, as they offer little advantage over using SVG directly. In any case, bug 1023488 covers changing how we handle image assets.
