From what I can see looking at the following page on apple.com [http://support.apple.com/downloads/#quicktime], the latest versions of Quicktime is as follows:

Windows -> 7.7.5
Mac OSX 10.5 -> 7.7.0
Mac OSX 10.6.3+ -> 7.6.6

That suggests that plugincheck is correct. However, I am still doing some further research to get a better idea on the release history as this does not sound entirely correct to me. For example, the version of quicktime I have installed is 7.7.3 on Mac 10.9.4

Even looking at the platform support listed here, it seems as 7.7.1 is the latest release for OSX - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QuickTime#Platform_support

I am trying to get hold of someone at Apple that might be able to clear this situation up. If anyone here can point me to a release history page, or someone that might be able to assist, please do.

So, my reading is it would be 'normal on a Mac' to have

However, if you need to use an older version there is a version 7.x.x.

If plugincheck can detect *both* the 'legacy version 7.x.x' as well as
the 'current version 10.x' then it would be good to test both.

I'm thinking of the situation:
"Mozilla Plugin check page displays Java plugin as vulnerable
even if the latest Java 7 version is installed"
bug 985968
which occurred when Java 8 was released by Oracle, in March 2014,
and Java 7 u51 [Java SE 7 Update 51 AKA 10.51.2 AKA 1.7.0.51]
was still the current version in the '7 family / branch'.

See bug 985056 for the change to the Database that then triggered the above issue.

Schalk, it would be interesting to know which QuickTime versions are
in the database.  Do you have any version 10.x?
If you do, why is 7.7.1 showing as "Up to Date" in the screen shot (from comment # 0)?

No, there currently is no version 10.x but, with that said, even though I have Quicktime Player 10.3, I still have plugin version 7.3.3

So, the hardest part of this, and managing the plugins database in general is, that for some plugins there just seems to be no good release history page one can use as a reference when researching this. I can for example not seem to find the release notification of the 7.3.3 plugin release for Mac. If you go to apple.com/download right now, you will find that it has version 7.0.0 and version 7.6.6 (http://www.apple.com/support/mac-apps/quicktime/ see recent software updates)

I agree!  The https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QuickTime (cited in comment # 4)
is, in this case, by far the most useful.

My reading of this is:
Apple now 'bundle QuickTime as part of the OS' for
"QuickTime X (QuickTime Player v10.x)" as explained in
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QuickTime (cited in comment # 4).

So Apple have, I speculate, 'done the updates for version 10.x'
as part of the 'OS update' and are not separate downloads.

So, you might have the Application "Quicktime Player 10.3" (that might not use plugins)
as well as a version 7.3.3 (or is it 7.7.3) Quicktime Player (that uses plugins).

I also wondered if "plugin version 7.3.3" (or is it 7.7.3) is just a
reflection of your 'Apple OS' (in your case - from comment # 3) "Mac 10.9.4".

Mavericks v10.9.4 Update is a recent update (30 June 2014).

So, nothing to stop Apple updating both "QuickTime X (QuickTime Player v10.x)"
and QuickTime 7.7.x if that was 'detected by the Mavericks update'.

So, I speculate, QuickTime 7.7.1 might be the
latest *separate* 'QuickTime 7.7.x' download (for Mac OS X v10.6 [and newer]) and
QuickTime 7.7.3 'arrived as part of the OS X Mavericks v10.9.4 Update'.

As you said: not easy to sort out when the documentation is so poor.
