buildid: 2001100908, linux binary on FreeBSD, twm press alt-v to bring up the View menu, then: o move the mouse to the right of `Character Encoding' item, press c to bring up the submenu the submenu shows o move the mouse away from the region of the upcoming submenu press c to bring up the submenu the submenu is invisible, but it still works blindly (I could use up down arrow keys to move over and blindly select other charsets)
oops, the summary was wrong

Worksforme, linux milestone 0.9.5. Please try this again with the new milestone and a fresh profile (just move .mozilla somewhere safe and start mozilla again). This smells of profile corruption.

I don't follow the 'steps to reproduce'. Run that by me again :-]
I'm posting this with 0.9.5 and fresh profile. the problem remains here. sorry that the descrption was ambiguous. to reproduce: 1. press alt-v, move the mouse to the right of the `Translate' item (don't highlight it, just leave the mouse outside the menu) 2. press 'z' to bring up the Text Zoom submenu. it shows correctly. 3. press left to close the Zoom submenu. 4. press 'c' or 'l' or 'w' 5. The submenu wouldn't show. but the pointer style is still an arrow pointing to the right, which means menu is still activated.

Just followed your instructions step by step, still no problem in sight. I'm using modern theme, what do you use?
it worked fine with enlightenment. it must be a problem with twm. I have my twm configured mozilla-bin autoraise, maybe the submenu is recognized as different window name? attached is the my twmrc

I will confirm this now. Twm is not really that popular anymore. Do you have the same problem with fvwm or another twm sibling?

It looks like an autoraise problem. if I remove AutoRaise {"emacs" "rxvt" "mozilla-bin" "TWM Icon Manager" } from .twmrc, the menu and submenu are working as it should. so is the submenu implementation has something different from menu? looks like the submenu is considered as another window and its window-id is not mozilla-bin?
