Steps to reproduce:

newly installed version of thunderbird, with no dictionaries added. Running on Arch Linux in a Gnome desktop environment. This appears to be the latest version in the standard repositories.

1) compose a new message
2) open spell checking dialog
3) select 'Download More Dictionaries...'
4) select either link under 'British English'
5) Click download


Actual results:

Nothing, button presses (as per HTML by the looks of things), but it does not seem that any download is started, or any dictionary installs

The dictionary downloads and installs

How? "Options > Check Spelling..."? Exact steps welcome.

Finally found that at the bottom of the "Language" dropdown...

I took the second one and ended up on https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/downloads/latest/461570/addon-461570-latest.xpi?src=dp-btn-primary

There is no such thing, but a "Add to Thunderbird" button instead. Later on, a "Software installation" window opens.

Thunderbird 31 on Fedora 20.

Spell chacking dialog opened as follows:

1) In open editor, click on text editing window to enable 'Spelling' button
2) click main body of 'Spelling' button

On the dictionaries web page, the download button's target URL matches URL given above. For completeness I asked thunderbird to open the page in firefox and got https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/british-english-dictionary-2/

I have attached a screenshot that shows the download button. In doing this I've noticed that none of the reviews, developer information or version information have loaded, and the loading bar bottom right is at about 50%.

I haven't raised this anywhere else as yet, is this something you reccomnend?

Loads for me here; cannot reproduce the problem.

I see this too. Nothing in the Error Console.
OS: Linux → All
Hardware: x86_64 → All
My error console got completely bombed with lots of messages.

Worked as expected on my trunk build. I had no additional dictionary packages installed. When clicking on "Download More Dictionaries...", it opened a new tab with allowed me to select which one to download from the Add-ons marketplace.

Hi All,
I've took the same steps and experienced the same as Andrew, using TB 31.1.0, Hungarian version under Windows.

It took me to a download page, and pressing the "Download now" (in my language "Letöltés most") button, the download did not begin.

Under the Installing/downloading section of the web page (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/british-english-dictionary-2/) there was a "star-like rotating progress bar" circling in endless loop..., but there was no download window.

Workaround steps:
1) Googled the add-on (extension?) using Firefox. At the time of writing this post the URL is the following. (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/british-english-dictionary-2/)
2) Downloaded the .xpi file using right click on the "+Add to Firefox" button
3) Switched back to TBird and opened Add-ons(Extensions?)
4) Clicked on the gear icon and chose "Install add-on from file..."
5) Browsed for the saved .xpi file of the dictionary and installed.

Remarks: It created a new category (Dictionaries) in the left-pane of the Extensions tab. Worked without restarting TB.

Hope it helps until this bug is eliminated. :D

New user, so forgive errors please! TB 31.1.2, UK download. Win 7: 
Cannot download the English British Dictionary from within TB. Download whirly goes on and on! Tried the work around suggested above (downloaded .xpi file to hard disk)but I have no "Add Ons" drop down under "Tools" on TB. 

One suggestion was to try the US version. My spelling is OK(!) but I need the red lines to indicate typos! Would this work? I note my version is called "release update channel". What does this mean please? As a novice would I be better with an earlier version? How to get? Thanks

If you don't see Add-ons menu, it could be that someone disabled it so that nobody could install add-ons on that system.

Hi Michael, I'm using a different language version, so I'm only guessing the menu item names.
Press ALT on your keyboard, the menu line should appear.
1) Open the "Tools" menu, then choose Extensions or Addons, whichever appears in the menu (should be the 3rd menu item). After this you will land on the Addons(Extensions) tab.
2) Choose the 2nd option in the left pane, the name should be also Addons or Extensions.
3) Click on the gear icon left to the search box.
4) Click on the gear icon and chose "Install add-on from file..."
5) Browse for the saved .xpi file of the dictionary and install.

It means that the during the update process TB will download and install the latest stable version for you. Most users need this. Developers and testers need the nightly builds only.

My best advice is to use the latest version. It will be safer and better. I find no sense in downgrading your TB.

Strangely, I can no longer reproduce this. Maybe there was some changes on the web page that made it work?

I'm finding that it works too; extension file will now download. It doesn't install automatically, but i guess that's a file association think I haven't set up in Arch (the OS). Finding the dictionary via the extensions finder in thunderbird will install automatically.
Yes now it downloads, instead of installs. That might be the change (the webpage made)...
I can confirm. It installed without issues under TB 31.3.

Bug 1081190 is now fixed, and this turned out to be what's causing this, so duping.
