Exactly the same JP problem happened for patches after my patch. So it seems unrelated to mask-type activation (which is activated already on nighties by default).

Is this still SVG only?
Yes, it applies to the SVG <mask> element itself.  The 'mask-mode' property is used to changes how referenced mask images are interpreted (by alpha or luminance).
