Steps to reproduce:

1. Start a new plain text message
2. Select 'fixed width' from font list
3. Start writing and hit enter for a new line

Note:
This issue was introduced with design changes in TB 31.

Workaround:
Use variable font to compose messages

Actual results:

Font size of cursor very small, lines and spell checking issues. See screenshot attached

Expected results:

Should be rendered correctly
You can change the fixed width size under Preferences | Display | Formatting | Fonts & Colors

This is actually the first thing I tried (set mine to 15). Nothing changed.

The courser has a very small size indicating it is using some 'minimum' font size.
Also, its size is changing according to the font size setting; minus a constant value.

There is a minimum font size setting in Preferences | Display | Formatting | Fonts & Colors | Advanced. I went ahead and changed this to 15. Again, to no avail.

This is clearly a bug, not a settings error. I attached anoter screenshot - I hope the problem will be more clear.
font size rendering bug in fixed width compose message. Cursor and line size size has a constant value subtracted subtracted from the display font setting.
Ah, I looked at the wrong setting. For compose you can change size under Composition | General | HTML

(And yes, that looks like a bug. I haven't seen it myself. Maybe a bug in the font or display driver?)
OK, I just found the answer; this only happens using the Gnome 'Monospace' font (witch happens do be the default fixed width on many Linux systems).
In TB I changed the default fixed font to DejaVu Sans Mono and also the compose font in 'HTML'. The former fixed rendering in message windows, the latter works for compose. Now, the problem is gone.

This is still a bug, though..
