from Olli,

I was also disappointed that the tree widget was only tri-modal (selected, not-selected, or some-children-selected). It is unable to distinguish between the node's item, and the node's tree: So we can either select whole trees with a single click, or select individuals with a single click, but not both.
Make a new widget that allows quad-modal view (all-selected, self-selected-some-children-not, self-not-selected-some-children-are, none-selected), which can handle some complex selection with minimal clicking.
