Recently, we ran an A/B test on start.mozilla.org/en-US/, testing alternative copy and a new CTA within a modal window that appears to users running older versions of Firefox. Specifically, this test looked at those users running Firefox 3.

Here's the original experience that was the control group: http://cl.ly/image/301P150q393w

The winning variation (see http://cl.ly/image/0A2f2i1E2X18), outperformed the original by improving download conversion by 40% in addition to reducing the % of users clicking 'No Thanks' by 16%.

Can we please implement the winning variation on this page and then eventually get it localized?
Jon, can you please update the modal based on the winning variation mentioned above?

Matej,

We'd like your feedback on the copy, to see if it needs any additional wordsmithing. Can you please check out the winning variation? Thanks!

This is awesome. I love it. The only thing is that we shouldn't be exposing version numbers to users like that.

Let's change the second line to this:

Why not try a brand new 2014 version of Firefox instead?

Thanks.

P.S. Will it be easy to update the year 2015? Otherwise we could do without the year altogether:

Why not try the latest version of Firefox instead?
Flags: needinfo?(Mnovak)
The version number and the year does add maintenance to the site that will change every 6 weeks and annually. The year can be made to be dynamic via JavaScript and we could drop the version number as Matej mentioned.
Sounds good with me. Thanks for the feedback guys!
jpetto: what's your ETA on a change like this? Post 10th Anniv?
Flags: needinfo?(jon)
Yeah, post 10th anniversary. It is in my queue.

Here's the results from the test and the winning variation with the Firefox browser screenshot: https://mana.mozilla.org/wiki/display/EN/Project+Start+Up+-+Test+Results
I don't know if we can do a dynamic year with localization. Adding flod to get his thoughts.
Flags: needinfo?(francesco.lodolo)
I don't think it's safe to add a variable to replace the year in the middle of a string.

We're doing something like this for copyright in the footer, but that's kind of safer (©1998-$year).
For sure I see some locales not using Arabic numerals in the middle of a sentence or for ordered lists
Flags: needinfo?(francesco.lodolo)
I think the new copy works fine without a year - "Why not try a brand new version of Firefox instead?"

:matej & :garethc - Can we move forward without a year in the string?

When you say dynamic, did you mean client-side javascript value in the string?

Yeah, I wasn't sure if this was something we've done with L10n - adding a placeholder in a localized string (<span> or something?) that gets populated by JavaScript on load.

I'm also unsure of how this technique would work for locales where Arabic numerals aren't appropriate...but I really know very little about that side of things. :/

I've got a PR opened here: https://github.com/mozilla/fx36start/pull/12

Are we good with the copy (sans-year) as shown in the screenshot?
Missed the copy update, that "That 2010 Firefox 3 you're rockin' sure is awesome." is so American it almost hurts.

You're right. I think we can keep the sentiment while making it more friendly for the rest of the world:

You're using Firefox 3, which was amazing in 2010, but why not try a brand new version of Firefox instead? It's way better, more secure and only takes a minute to update.

Grazie :-)
Also another request. When we run these a/b tests can we also try to expand out into at least a few different locales that represent the 70% of Firefox users that prefer languages other than English?

I'm sure we can find a few localizers to be on standby to help with translation on test messages. Just ask.
for example if we tested did the a/b tests using just de, fr, es-ES and it that would have the same or more impact on the user population as testing for en-US, and probably be a message much more suitable for the rest of the 80+ locales that the web site serves.
Can we do two upgrade modals?

1) Firefox 3 and before (described above)

2) Firefox 4-29 (pre Australis)

After they are upgraded to the latest version, start.mozilla.org will be replaced with about:home when bug 1077740 gets pushed out with Firefox 34+.

Gareth: thoughts?
Flags: needinfo?(garethcull.bugs)
We're already grabbing the Fx version in JS, so conditional modal content would be fairly simple from a dev standpoint. Just need the copy.
I'm fine with two upgrade modals since Jon says its pretty easy to implement.

How's this logic?

= Firefox 3.*

"You're using Firefox 3, which was amazing in 2010, but why not try a brand new version of Firefox instead? It's way better, more secure and only takes a minute to update."

= Firefox 4.*

"You're using Firefox 4, which was amazing in 2011, but why not try a brand new version of Firefox instead? It's way better, more secure and only takes a minute to update."

< Firefox 3 or >= Firefox 5:

"Looks like you’re using an older version of Firefox. Update to stay fast and safe."

<> Firefox (IE, Chrome, Safari, etc.)

-> redirect to https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/desktop/

I don't know why we would want to provide a Firefox-branded search engine to non-Firefox users. Seems like a great opportunity to convert them.

While we are at it, change the DL button to include new/ in the URL to remove an additional redirect.

Whiteboard: [kb=1554867] → [kb=1554867][fxgrowth]
how about changing "way better" to "better" or using another example such as "faster and more secure"

If the copy has terms that match to the urban dictionary or other slang sources that's a good signe we should consider disqualifying, or at least provide a localization note giving more context and suggesting alternatives.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=way%20better

that will help keep us away from bad or confusing translations, or slow the localization process down with questions or confusion.

way better plan? or no way? ;-)
After discussion, here's our messaging:

Firefox 3.x

"You're using Firefox 3, which was amazing in 2010, but why not try a brand new version of Firefox instead? It's better, more secure and only takes a minute to update."

Firefox 4.x

"You're using Firefox 4, which was amazing in 2011, but why not try a brand new version of Firefox instead? It's better, more secure and only takes a minute to update."

Firefox < 29 (if not 3.x or 4.x)

"Looks like you’re using an older version of Firefox. Update to stay fast and safe."

Not Firefox

Will be redirected to https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/desktop/.

The PR has been updated with the above: https://github.com/mozilla/fx36start/pull/12

Are we still finalizing copy, or are we ready for code review?
All requirements set? Are we ready to review?

comment 25 looks good. Let's move forward with dev, testing and get it out the door. The Y! change is consuming my time now and we should wrap up other in-progress tasks as much as possible.
