On thimble.mofostaging.net, with a freshly created account (and no makes), if I pick "My Makes" from the user menu, I get this ugly error:

{"error":"Error: The query produced invalid ElasticSearch DSL"}

by itself as the only page.

so

a) should be captured and presented in a page that doesn't leave user without a path back to a good page
b) shoudln't happen.

(maybe not login-related, but don't know at this point).

We've spun up a non-broken version of ES and populated it with staging make data, so that error should be a thing of the past.

This bug can now focus on proper handling of errors when the makeapi is down.
