We could check http://169.254.169.254/latest/meta-data/spot/termination-time and figure out whether the instances is scheduled to be killed. Halting the instance would prevent possible job termination and retries.

Also, it would be great to call "poweroff" after some time out (sleep 5m?) to allow us to login to the instances in case something is wrong.
