Build ID: 2001-12-03-03, Windows 2000.

Summary: 'Get Next xxx News Messages' displays incorrect value.

Steps to Reproduce:

1.  Subscribe to news://news.mozilla.org/netscape.public.mozilla.mail-news
2.  Click on the new newsgroup, making sure you get the 'Download Headers' dialog.
3.  Enter an offset of +/- 100 (in this case, it said I had 18118 new postings,
so I entered 18018 into the 'Download xxx Headers' dialog.
4.  Let it download all 18018 headers (it'll actually display 17506 or something
close, another bug).
5.  Open the File menu, and notice that value in 'Get Next xxx News Messages'.

Expected Results:

If you have less than the value in 'Server Settings' under 'Ask me before
downloading more than xxx messages' in the Account Manager, it should reflect
the remaining articles.

Actual Results:

There are multiple bugs here, but they might all be symptoms of a single bug. 
I'll list them as concisely as I can:

1.  The value in 'Get Next xxx News Messages' should've read (in this case) 'Get
Next 100 News Messages', since that's all that are left.
2.  If you look at the value in the Account Manager under 'Server Settings' for
news.mozilla.org, you'll see 'Ask me before downloading more than 18018 messages'.

NOTE: The actual # of messages I downloaded was indeed 100.  I think this could
be just the way we escape/format/display the value.

Is this still reproducible, stephend?

Also, in #4 you say it displays 17506 messages, and in Actual Results, you say
it downloaded 100 messages - did I miss something here?

I just ran into this: indeed, it is still reproducible.

When I clicked a newsgroup with 552 new messages, the dialog popped up and told
me there were 1509 new messages available.

Håkan is not currently sing Thunderbird and the other commenter's address is invalid.

Isn't this a dup of one of the much older bugs noted in meta Bug 71728??

sorry for the spam.  making bugzilla reflect reality as I'm not working on these bugs.  filter on FOOBARCHEESE to remove these in bulk.

I doubt this is major, as it's more or less a cosmetic issue. Confirming on branch.

I don't recall seeing this in recent versions. In any event, nntp backend has been rewritten.
