John, I am still not able to reproduce the crash, I followed the same steps you describe, and obtain the cert from "certificate.mcom.com" for user sectest, and I am able to sign and send the message to myself. I tested it on Windows NT 4.0 with today's trunk build. (2001120410) I also tested on Mac OS X.1 and Linux 2.4 using today trunk build (2001120408), and they worked fine.

I am assuming that the encryption or signing cert specified in the prefs are not missing, and they are not expired for this bug.

Maybe John didn't set an encryption set (i.e., only configured the signing cert).

Okay, now I can reproduce the crash by not setting the encryption cert under Edit->Mail/New setting->Secure Mail (leave it blank, and just selecting the signing cert).

b: 2001-12-06-03 (w2k) I just enrolled a cert from thawte.com (I had to it with MSIE because they do not recognize mozilla and there seems to be another bug with PSM), exported it from MSIE, imported it into mozilla (it all worked fine until then :) ) and then changed my mail settings then I tried to send an encrypted mail (mozilla wouldn't send it due to an error in settings it said), didn't work ... then I tried to send a signed mail, crashed (there are two talkbacks from me (search for my email address) or S/MIME in the body btw, isn't this critical?

Verified again. Importing from Thawte worked without hassle, sending signed/encrypted mails in all combinations worked. Just a remark, on the first selection to encrypt the mail without having a SIGN for the recipient and already having "message security" (whatever that means" selected, mozilla crashed.
