My wife told me last night that she expected "Add to homescreen" to the Firefox home screen (i.e. a pinned site), not the Android one. The feature predates our real "Hub" feature, so maybe it deserves a reword now. I wonder if we should be more explicit in the text there "Add to Android homescreen". That's a bit long though... I also wonder if we should consider adding a "Add to Firefox Homescreen" option (or letting you pick which one when you tap "Add to homescreen")?

Any ideas here Anthony? This also always felt like it should dovetail with the "Share" work, but never quite got integrated... Maybe there are already plans there?

Good question Wesj. I think that this does actually happen in the same "share sheet" interaction for iOS and so there's a nice continuity there. Off the top of my head, it might be worth exploring having "Add to Home Screen" as an item in the Share menu. Either way, I agree about the confusion with terminology. Though, it's tough because "Add to Android Home Screen" is a bit long, but our "Home Panels" do share a very similar name. Do we have telemetry on how many people actually use this features?

For telemetry, look for "add_to_launcher" action variations. But remember, you only need to use the feature once, after that you are tapping on an icon on your homescreen. So don't use the "the number of times people tap 'add_to_launcher' action" as a metric for how often it's used. The question becomes, "how many shortcut icons are on your homescreen and how often do you tap them?" For me personally, this is a fairly important feature. Also, I'm pretty sure this is the exact same terminology Chrome for Android uses, and the old Android stock browser before that.

(In reply to Mark Finkle (:mfinkle) from comment #3) > For telemetry, look for "add_to_launcher" action variations. So don't use the "the number of times people tap > 'add_to_launcher' action" as a metric for how often it's used. The question > becomes, "how many shortcut icons are on your homescreen and how often do > you tap them?" We could add something to these homescreen intents to track telemetry on them. We track other ways we're started. I'm actually a bit surprised we don't have this :) I'll file a bug.

Its the presence and prominence of our Hub that makes us a bit different. If we did make this add to your firefox homescreen (or my favorite option right now which is "Add to Homescreen -> Opens a dialog with "Android Homescreen" or "Firefox Homescreen"), the terminology also gets confusing with our pinned sites metaphore. Bookmarking is also technically "add to homescreen" in a way, but isn't as pretty/prominent as the top sites screen. Maybe it should be? i.e. we could try things like "User makes first bookmark" -> Show a button toast "Do you want to use bookmarks as your main homepage?" Just throwing ideas at the wall here....

I could have sworn there was an old bug open about this but I cannot find it.

FWIW, Chrome uses "Add to homesceen", and we use "Add to Home Screen". So there is _some_ difference there. For me, when I see "Pin Site" next to "Add to Home Screen", the difference is clearer. But what's weird is we don't show that on long-press of the URL / toolbar. Wesj, which area was she pressing when this originally came up? 3-dot -> Page -> ? or URL/Toolbar?

3-dot menu -> Page. Adding from the urlbar is a bit hard, since you'd/we'd have to pick a position, but nothing that we couldn't design a default or a UI to fix.
