What I'm missing in all the mail apps I know, is a way to export a mail account
with all its settings and mails into a single file in a way that I can move it
to another computer and just click import account file xy. Moving around the
profile files sort of works but isn't very user friendly and at the moment not
cross-platform.

I'd suggest something like taking the needed settings from the .prefs files
making a new .prefs file and packing it together with the mail folder files in a
.jar file.

Bug# 82485 covers the Import issue: [RFE] Import Mail, Mail Settings & Address
Book all at once

To address the Export issue let's change the Summary from "[RFE] Export/Import
of mail accounts (platform independent)" to "[RFE]Export Mail, Mail Settings &
Address Book all at once".

Marking nsbeta1 to make moving mail/settings/ab from one profile to another easier.

It's not necessarily *all* at once, it would be nice to be able to export one
mail account or several at once.
Is this the only RFE for exporting mail? I can't seem to find any export
options in the menus, and this is the only bug I found.

How is this bug standing now? Will be some export tool (not just for address
book) for mail and settings?
No one's working on this, adding helpwanted keyword. Everyone with some time
available feel free to work on this. ;)

This could even be implemented as an external application which lets you choose
whatever parts of your profile you want to export. It should be cross-platform
so you can take your linux profile to your mac or wherever you want to. It
should also give you the possibility to merge saved profile (-parts) into an
existing profile.

Ok, but I think first of all, not to another mozilla profile :-)
Export to: msg, eml, unix mailbox (etc.) formats. It is possible to implement?
Like import is already there.

[RFE] is deprecated in favor of severity: enhancement. They have the same meaning.

Is sb working on this, just curious :)
For me it would be interesting to export mail settings (including directory
structure of pop accounts, filters...) to have my work mail in sync with my home
mail.
Hi Seth, does it make sense to increase Priority from '-' to smth more specific
(P4,P3) to keep this enhancement request in mind when enhancing MailNews in the
future?

In our efforts to convert users to a linux-mozilla environment to improve
quality and reliability of the computer environment this problem is something of
a 'SHOW STOPPER'
For those of us providing support in this transition process customers are very
critical of this lack of feature.

Perhaps somebody should make an extension if no one is taking care of it.
I think this is more than an enhancement because the other mail programs have
this function.
If we start from the folder of the profile that must be saved, we could save:
XXXXXXXX.s (X is a digit, contains the usernames and passwords)
abook.mab (addresses)
history.mab (collected addresses)
prefs.js (must be processed, i.e. the user name and the name of the profile must
be replaced by generic names)
\Mail\Local Folders (the entire folder)

[3] yes, this ability would make tech support for tbird _so_ much easier.

take care,
lee

As we do wish to transfer settings from one computer to another or from one platform to another the ability to transfer user data is very important.
This lack of export filter is a constant problem for me and for many.

I am now reglarly having to go through the process of

1/ Installing Thunderbird on Windows

2/ Importing data from OE into Thunderbird

3/ Exporting addess book

4/ Taking 'mail' folder from Windows thunderbird and putting it into profile on the Linux platform and importing address book

While messy the workaround is working but a single defined method for backup and transfer remains very desirable.
