In the message compose window, there's a dropdown to insert graphical emoticons into your message. As a user, it seems to work ... a graphical emoticon is inserted into the WYSIWYG. If you check your Sent folder, it also seems to work, as Thunderbird renders such as ":-)" as a graphical emoticon ... but to your recipient, it just shows as plain text ":-)", even when included in an HTML e-mail. Thunderbird should insert the graphical emoticon into the HTML version of the e-mail.

I think this is a legitimate request, perhaps with a hidden pref, probably defaulting to including smileys as inline images, to ensure ux-wysiwyg. Another alternative might be bug 1213694, to use standard unicode characters for smileys. Perhaps triple pref, 0=text, 1=inline-images, 2=unicode-emojis.
