This problem looks like bug 52596, but Mac specific.

This problem occurs only in proportional fonts.
Different from bug 52596.

using FizzillaCFM/2002080303, this happens without the font size stuff, but only
in certain fonts (Type 1?). Is this the same problem, or should I file a new bug?

This bug is targeted at a Mac classic platform/OS, which is no longer supported
by mozilla.org. Please re-target it to another platform/OS if this bug applies
there as well or resolve this bug.

I will resolve this bug as WONTFIX in four weeks if no action has been taken.

Mozilla 1.0 and later on Mac OS 9.2.2 don't have this problem.
