Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_10_4) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/42.0.2311.135 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

I opened a page with a large grid of videos. The videos are laid out in a 4xN fashion where the majority are off the viewport and need to be scrolled into view. All videos are paused initially.

Actual results:

My computer restarted with a graphics problem.

Expected results:

I should be able to view the page without my computer force-restarting.
Welp, this just happened to me.

(my) STR:

1). Open the URL in Beta 38
2). Not much happens, leave tab open and go about your business
3) 5-10 mins later... BOOM. The OS panics and I have to reboot.

Here's the problem details from the OSX reporter:

Err, what's the most useful way to help pin this down?
I can also reproduce this issue on an EXTERNAL monitor.

Assuming this has something to do with video decoding, Cc'ing some people who have powers in this domain.
Mike, do you have an external monitor attached?

> Started Firefox Beta via a terminal.

Vlad, what, precisely, does this mean? You're not ssh-ing to do this, are you?
Flags: needinfo?(vlad)
Flags: needinfo?(miket)
Steven, nope. I can repro with just my rMBP.

But the OP Ralph (who mentioned to this to me and Vlad over IRC) said that he's been connected to an external monitor as well. I'll head upstairs and plug into a monitor to see if it makes any difference for me.
Mike, I have exactly the same machine as you do (a Retina MacBookPro10,1). In FF 38b9 with a clean profile (the current beta version), I'm going to load this bug's URL (and nothing else) and let it sit for a while, running on OS X 10.10.3, to see what happens.

Crashes for me in Beta or Nightly on any monitor, this is how I run Firefox:

```
➜  MacOS  pwd
/Applications/FirefoxNightly.app/Contents/MacOS
➜  MacOS  ./firefox-bin -p
Steven, just keep opening and closing tabs with the jsfiddle url at around six tabs at a time. It should crash quickly in less than a minute.
Mike, I notice that a particular video plays (with sound) only if you hover the mouse over it.  (The playback is usually very glitchy, with lots of drops -- both video and audio.)
When these panics happen, do you have the mouse over a particular video?
(For now, in my test, I have the mouse outside the window -- no none of the videos is currently playing.)
Vlad, I haven't crashed yet -- though I have only one tab open with https://jsfiddle.net/m6wnuc6f/6/embedded/result/.  I'll try loading it in several tabs at once.
> keep opening and closing tabs with the jsfiddle url at around six tabs at a time
What does this mean, exactly?
> I haven't crashed yet
I haven't crashed or panicked yet.
Flags: needinfo?(vlad)
Flags: needinfo?(miket)
Interesting. Previously I made this testcase for stress-testing:
http://people.mozilla.org/~cpearce/stress/
I've never tested it on MacOSX before.
I'd guess this would be solved by using a limited number of decoders, and assigning them to video elements in a most-recently-used order, making the video decoders in least recently used video elements "dormant" (shutdown). We already have code for dormant, but it's only activated when the video isn't visible after 60 seconds.
> Mike, I notice that a particular video plays (with sound) only if you hover the mouse over it.  (The playback is usually very glitchy, with lots of drops -- both video and audio.)
Yeah, very glitchy.
> When these panics happen, do you have the mouse over a particular video?
Not really, no.
FWIW, I haven't gotten a panic or crash with my external monitor connected. For me, STR aren't very clear--but this page has killed me 3 times today. It sounds like Vlad can get the panic 100% of the time.
> http://people.mozilla.org/~cpearce/stress/
This doesn't make FF 38b9 crash (or my MacBookPro10,1 panic).  But both the video and the sound are very glitchy.  The sound is truly horrible :-(
Here is a video on how to reproduce this bug: https://www.dropbox.com/s/201n3jdavi8ub6x/VID_20150504_151220.mp4?dl=0
That video isn't very helpful.  Precise, detailed, written descriptions are *much* better.
In any case, I think I've done what you videoed several times without either crashing or panicking.
Note that we don't know which hardware/driver is triggering these panics.  At least I can't glean that information from comment #1.
Whoever sees these panics, please look through your logs in attempt to find this information.  I'd also like to know whether the logs look identical, or whether there are significant differences.
(Still haven't crashed or panicked yet.)
Steven,
Here are two Mac Book Pro Retina configurations that this happens on:
http://v14d.com/i/5547ccd0da4e0.jpg
Precise steps:
1. Open Terminal, change directory to Nightly app directory: `cd /Applications/FirefoxNightly.app/Contents/MacOS`
2. Started Firefox using `./firefox-bin -p`
3. Create a new profile using the Firefox profiler picker dialog
4. Open bug URL[1] (I use CMD + T to create new tabs and paste the URL)
5. Repeat "step 4" (from above) 10 times.
6. Close all tabs opened in "step 4 & 5"
7. Repeat from step 4 until you Mac restarts
[1] https://jsfiddle.net/m6wnuc6f/6/embedded/result/
Steven what is your configuration? Are you on Yosemite?
> 6. Close all tabs opened in "step 4 & 5"
How, exactly, do you do this?  Do you press cmd-w 10 times?
In any case, I tried your STR twice (doing this in step 6) and saw no crash or panic.
> http://v14d.com/i/5547ccd0da4e0.jpg
Sounds like these are a MacBookPro11,2 and a MacBookPro11,3.
But the kernel panic report from comment #1 was definitely from a MacBookPro10,1 (like mine).
> Are you on Yosemite?
Yes, as I mentioned above -- OS X 10.10.3.
Vlad and Mike, please do as I suggested in comment #17.
For all we know, these panics could have nothing to do with video hardware or drivers (or directly with this bug's URL).  For example, it could conceivable be network drivers that are blowing up.
Wikipedia has a good page on the configuration of the various MacBook Pro models:
I grepped for 'firefox' in system.log: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/bd47691f8dd85f998da7. And I have the panic report up in Comment #1.
If you guys don't want to look at them yourselves, please attach here as many different panic reports as you can find.
Don't paste them into comments (that would tend to make this bug unreadable).  Instead save them as files, then choose "Add an attachment" above.
> Err, what's the most useful way to help pin this down?
What are we trying to pin down exactly? Seems like Macs have a problem with opening too many decoders.
From the only panic log we currently have available (in comment #1):
So ... for those of you who've seen this bug:
Do any of you have external devices connected via Bluetooth or USB?
If so please do without them for a while, and see if this has any
effect on your ability to reproduce this bug.
In fact, for this test, I suggest you turn off Bluetooth entirely.
I'll try some more tests w/o Bluetooth later this afternoon and upload any panic logs if I can get them.
FWIW, I spent a while trying to reproduce (again) on Beta and Nightly last night and couldn't get a crash. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
Maybe bug 1133633 made the difference. We turned on async decoding, which let VideoToolbox handle decoding as it wishes...
Whoever saw these panics, please test again with current betas, Developer Editions and m-c nightlies.  If you no longer see them, we should mark this bug WORKSFORME.
