As per Google documentation[1], yes it should.

Summary: GMail OAuth2 acope should be https:// not http:// → GMail OAuth2 scope should be https:// not http://
Doesn't seem to cause any change in any way.
Tested 
 - creating new account, read + send
 - upgrading an existing account + send
