Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:39.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/39.0
Build ID: 20150629114848

Steps to reproduce:

1. Switch page to reader view.
2. Select a color theme.
3. Become disappointed that no existing theme looks how I want.

Actual results:

I acquired the desire to create my own color scheme for the reader view. Then I switched back to using the Clearly add-on while I wait for this to be possible.

Expected results:

Two possibilities:
1. A link beneath the color scheme selector leads to a page describing how to create new themes by hand, preferably with easy sharing with others. (Mabye via the Firefox addons/themes site?)
2. The color scheme selector includes a '+' button which allows you to define a new color scheme. Colors selected by RGB values and/or color wheel.

I had the exact same experience. The low-contrast reading mode is an excellent idea, but unfortunately isn't very functional or attractive right now (to me). Being able to edit this would be wonderful.
This is pretty standard reader UI -- a few simple choices for colors/text that fill most needs.

I'd recommend using an add-on (or perhaps something like Stylish) if you desire finer-grained control of the page's appearance.

I am only asking for bare minimum configurability of themes, nothing fancy. Even a simple RGB value editor which adjusts the foreground and background colors of existing themes would be better than requiring users to get an add-on (which probably won't cleanly integrate with the reader any ways). The current colors are not optimal for human eye relaxation POV, too high contrast, but I doubt we can all agree on what looks best. I think this feature could seriously help people thousands of users get better sleep, so I think it is worth the extra effort to make it more practically usable.
Unless my eyes deceive me or another addon is interfering, it seems the dark theme in FF40 is based on the Zenburn color scheme rather than pure black and white, an astronomical improvement. This reduces my need to customize the themes, though I still think having at least rudimentary RGB customization would be great for those whose eyes don't agree with Zenburn for whatever reason.
