I use ssh with port forwarding to get access to some of my e-mail accounts. Sometimes something bad happens and I want to log out of one of the shell windows; but since I'm still connected to the corresponding mail server, ssh won't let me exit. If there was a disconnect button for disconnecting from a given account in Mail/News, then I could disconnect and move on...without having to shut down Mozilla and restart it (which would require logging into my other Mail/News accounts that were previously open).

how about using the disconnect / offline button in the lower right hand corner of the window. Toggle offline try to do something then go back online.
as a workaround, killing ssh (ctrl-c) when it's waiting for forwarded connections to die is just as effective as having moz kill the connection.
The online/offline icon in the File menu or the lower right corner will dis/connect mozilla from the network.
