Details

Thunderbird v38.4.0 Mac OS X 10.10.5

Steps to reproduce:
In Thunderbird Preferences > General activate "Show an alert" and "Play a sound" and select "Count of new messages" in App Icon Actions.
In Account Settings > Server Settings activate "Check for new messages at startup", "Check for new messages every x minutes" and "Automatically download new messages".
Now at startup new messages are downloaded, TB plays a sound, the Dock icon bounces and the new message count is displayed in the Dock icon.
Do not open any of the new messages.
When new message are downloaded at the following automatic message checks, the Dock icon bounces and the new message count in the Dock icon gets updated, but TB doesn’t play any sound.
You’ll have to open at least one of the new messages to force TB to play a sound when downloading messages at the following automatic check.
In other words: as long as the new message count (red dot) is displayed in the Dock icon, TB won't play a sound at the arrival of new messages.

Expected behavior:
TB should play a sound every time new messages arrive.
Did this work for you prior to 38.4.0?

No, it doesn't work in previous versions neither (tested down to v17).
My guess is it has something to do with the OS X Notification Center.
Probably the sound stopped working half a year ago when I upgraded to OS X 10.9 from OS X 10.6 which had no Notification Center.

Hi Eckard.

When you set Thunderbird to "play a sound" you must then set which one. Which sound are you asking Thunderbird to play: default one or a custom one?
Flags: needinfo?(e.berberich)
I've set "System Alert Sound" which is "glass".
The behavior is the same if I choose a custom sound.
Also tested in a new virgin profile.

Hello, Eckard.

Notification sound behavior has changed in some of the latest build of Thunderbird.

Could you please check if it is still working (wrongly), as you reported, both with the custom sound and with the system default one? If you select the custom audio file, remember to disable the sound in the notification center system settings.

The (wrong) behavior is still the same. In my TB 52 profile I've chosen "Play the following sound file: Glass.aiff" in Thunderbird > Preferences > General > When new messages arrive. The sound notification for Thunderbird in the Notification Center is disabled.

Finally a miracle has happened! This bug is no longer present in Thunderbird 91.*
