Looks like a very simple patch, should fix this for all comm apps.

So what does that do, uses the existing thunderbird binary to do the same thing as xpcshell.exe?

Yes. I suspect they'd eventually get rid of xpcshell.exe if it is callable via firefox.exe

aleth included the changes needed in bug 1273849 - https://hg.mozilla.org/comm-central/rev/57840632b18a Not that I know if it's working or not. Bug 1238769 comment 7 and on.
