I'm not particular happy about how my top sites look like (see attached screenshot). There are multiple issues but what I really can't understand is why some top sites show a favicon while others show a thumbnail of the page. I assumed that this is because we do not have a thumbnail in our cache but even after visiting those site there's no thumbnail showing.

I agree, my top sites are really bad. Part of this will be better with bug 1046709, but I don't know why nextbus has this small favicon. I actually filed bug 1227247 about this a while ago.

HTTP headers that the site sends have a bit to do with this. We don't save images for sites that send no-cache or similar headers. Maybe we could do something else like a Gaussian blur?

Honestly I'd rather see us go forward with bug 1052933 rather than trying to improve our stored thumbnails.
