End user reported this began a week or two ago and have been unable to use Thunderbird since.

I've been able to reproduce the error messages on two other Windows (8.1 and 10, TB 38.7.2) machines and one running Arch Linux (38.7.1):
- one with a fresh Thunderbird install and profile.
- one that was previously used with its profile already setup.
- all times using the same e-mail account at the same ISP (Vidéotron).

CTD (https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/3764c154-bc87-46d9-9abc-fbffb2160405) happened on my Windows 8.1 machine after trying to click on multiple messages. Did not try to reproduce CTD on the user's machine yet.

Possibly of note: a handful of old messages did load successfully, even on the new profiles (i.e. they were not cached before). But adjacent ones did not. I did not see correlation, say, between the issue and plain-text vs HTML formatted e-mails.

Also managed to reproduce in both French and English installs of Thunderbird. (Trying to rule out localization.)

*** STEPS TO REPRODUCE ***

If new profile:
Configure to use a videotron.ca e-mail account with IMAP, SSL/TLS and normal password authentication.

Start Thunderbird.
See 'Unrecognized command' error message popup
E-mail messages list updates correctly, listing new, unread messages properly
Click a message
See 'Invalid UID Fetch attribute XSENDER' error message popup
Message window remains blank instead of displaying the desired message.

I have the same issue.

My email server is a imap.videotron.ca using port 143 and no encryption.

I am running: Linux parents 4.4.6-200.fc22.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Mar 16 22:13:40 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Thunderbird version is: thunderbird-38.6.0-3.fc22.x86_64
# uname -a
Linux parents 4.4.6-200.fc22.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Mar 16 22:13:40 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
# rpm -q -a | grep thunder
thunderbird-38.6.0-3.fc22.x86_64

Let me know if I can be of any help.

ie:
Downgrading to either 38.4.0 (first version installed on the computer in question) or 31.8.0 does not fix the problem.
A few more facts
- The last upgrade of Thunderbird on my machine was 2016-03-10
- I detected the problem 2016-04-07
- Videotron, my service provider, is doing a lot of maintenance.
- I use my system to access IMAP resources on my own machine, on gmail, yahoo, two other private site and videotron. Only videotron exhibits the issue.
The vidotron server is "Oracle Communications Messaging Server"

# telnet imap.videotron.ca 143
Trying 24.201.245.33...
Connected to imap.videotron.ca.
Escape character is '^]'.

A clue perhaps.
I received an email with 3 attachments. I was able to get the body of the email to display and only 1 of the 3 attachments, the last one.
Well, well, it works (for me) anyhow)
I believe that Videotron changed its configuration. The capabilities now read:
* OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4 IMAP4rev1 ACL QUOTA LITERAL+ NAMESPACE UIDPLUS CHILDREN BINARY UNSELECT SORT LANGUAGE ESEARCH ESORT IDLE AUTH=PLAIN] Messaging Multiplexor (Oracle Communications Messaging Server 7.0.5.35.0 64bit (built Mar 31 2015)

Since I do not know what the changes entail, a bug may only have side stepped by the configuration change.
