User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; rv:45.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/45.0
Build ID: 20160407164938

Steps to reproduce:

I went on youtube

Searched Live Streams in the youtube search bar and clicked on the first link on youtube called "Live", (any live stream that was given back by youtubes search can be used to reproduce the problem)

I clicked on a live stream on the first channel youtube found (Any live stream on youtube can reproduce the problem)

Actual results:

I watched my Gpu temps/Core clock/ Mem clock go up heavly, no other browser does this, I have tested the same urls from youtube's live streams on Internet explorer, Opera, Gk/ oogle chrome and Microsoft Edge and the Gpu temps/core clocMem clock do not even budge whereas firefox max's 4gb vram on my gpu and core clock is maxed out and the temp reachs 60c whereas other browsers temps stay low as 30c to 35c and mem and core clock stay well below 400mhzt

Expected results:

Based on testing via the same urls used on 4 other browsers the temps on my gpu stayed below 37c and the mem clock and core clock did not move above 400mhzt, that is what is suppose to happen.

The utube search that I have used: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4R8DWoMoI7CAwX8_LjQHig

Click on any LIVE STREAM or just find any live stream on youtube, results are the same
Live streams on youtube via firefox cause gpu to increase in temps and core and mem clocks max out. My pc specs are:

Right i enabled stats for nerds on the browsers but i cant see anything that causes a call for concern. I have uploaded ths pics. My gpu temps do increase and my mem and core clock max out on firefox while watching live streams on youtube. The stats for nerds info does not show me anything which I can put my finger on, maybe you can help. Thank you

Ye sure, is that while the live stream is running or just paste about:support in my browser and give you the info? I can do both if you like if that makes a difference. I will first post a screenshot without a live stream running and then if you want al post one with a live stream running. Thank you

You've got HW accelerated layers so I think this needs investigation. Can you see if it is still an issue in nightly 48?

Sorry, but I am not familiar with what nightly 48 means, can you please tell me what that is. As for HW Acceleration (I assume you mean Hardware acceleration within the firefox browser settings), this feature is on by default within the other browsers and I do not see any increase of GPU Temps or the mem/core clock max on the live streams while using these other browsers. Every other browser by default has HW Acceleration enabled (I have checked this) and nothing increases in regards to the GPU or CPU. I have disabled HW acceleration on firefox and my cpu temps increase while on the other browsers disabling or enabling HW acceleration makes no difference as both the cpu/gpu stay at idle temps.
The other browsers that I have on my pc, within there settings HW acceleration is enabled by default and disabling/enabling makes no difference and live streams work fine. Soon as I use firefox my gpu temps increase and my core/mem clock on my gpu max out. If i disable HW acceleration within the firefox settings my CPU temps and usage increases but no other browser does this, every other browser on my system apart from firefox runs live streams at idle temps and usage, its just firefox that increases my gpu temps, core and mem clock to the max and I dont know why.
It may have been an issue YouTube live streams not using HTML5 video which was fixed on the YouTube end. Is this still a problem for you?

I will check for you know as its been months since i used live streams on firefox i used other browsers since the issue does not happen. Give me a few minutes and I will respond back with the result

Yes it still is a issue, the temps still are going up on firefox. I checked IE, OPERA, Chrome. Avast Safezone Browser the issue is not there. Any fix for this, i reinstalled my OS, removed my GPU and put it back in, tried two different gpu's a gtx 750ti and a gtx 760 and same issue on the firefox browser. When i use other browsers mentioned here the temps are idle such as 35c when i watch a stream on firefox regardless of a gpu the temps just go slighty above 60 on all 3 gpus. Its clearly not a gpu issue as I have got my gpu changed tried two other gpus and re-installed my OS and issue is just with firefox

My guess is that this issue is related to the DXVA fallback path that is present up until 46. Can you try with Firefox 47 beta from http://beta.mozilla.org/ to see if you get the same issue?

Thank you for the replys. I will test the beta and will try my other two gpus aswell just to narrow as many possabilites as possible. Thank you, give me a few minutes I will install and let you know. Sorry for the late reply been away.

Thanks for the help, I will get back to you in a few minutes

I installed the beta 47. And the result is the same, I then moved my gtx 980 to my second pci slot and the results are the same. I got my other two gpu's 760 and 750ti and results are the same. There isn't a point of re-testing the other browsers as I have done that like 5 times and the issue is not present in these browsers, its only within firefox. Just to let you know I have a pre-built pc from my local uk store currys. Its a lenovo desktop and its a basic pc with gt 210 gpu, very basic to when it comes to pre built pc's and this pc has no modifications done to it, nothing added or removed or changed regarding hardware/software. Its only used for utube/email/browsing, the issue is present on firefox within that pc to. Just to be on the same page here can you or anyone within this post go on utube and verify the problem is not just me and my 3 gpus and my two other pc's.

this url: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4R8DWoMoI7CAwX8_LjQHig

this url has many live streams, can anyone of you please click on any live stream and view the stream for a few minutes and check if ur temps on ur gpu rises by viewing ur gpu monitoring software. I use speccy/msi afterburner to view my temps. If it does go up while watching the live stream then we can agree this is indeed a bug which needs to be addressed.

Thank you

I'm not seeing that with my testing here. CPU% is consistent when chat window is open or closed. My hunch here is that this is a case of bug 1284322 blocklisting a NVIDIA driver incorrectly and triggering software decoding and compositing. Please re-test with a recent build from aurora.mozilla.org or nightly.mozilla.org where bug 1284322 is now fixed.

I am not being rude but i dont think you read the issue here, what has a cpu being consistent got to do with a gpu? The problem is in regards to the Gpu increases the temps/Core clock/ Mem clock when watching youtube live streams on firefox. This Bug happens on all 3 of my pc's this has no RELATION TO THE CPU.

And no this bug is not fixed, on all 3 pc's its only firefox that does this. No other browsers do this. I even swapped out my gpu with 2 different ones and the isse is only present with firefox not anyother browser
Jean-Yves - could this have anything to do with the drain logic when the sourcebuffer underruns?
Flags: needinfo?(jyavenard)
it could be.

We could maybe disable the internal seek logic to ensure that all frames are always output, and instead stall earlier.

that will go against the spec however, but should significantly improve CPU usage when close to live.

I dont understand why ur talking about the cpu? When this issue ie affecting the GPU (graphics card) I hav even told you I exchanged my gpu, tried 2 other graphics cards, used the other pci x16 lane on all the gpus and the issue is present only on firefox. I even tried two other pc's and the again the issue is with onlt firefox. I have no clue why ur talking about cpu.

I don't think draining and re-decoding is workable.

If the spec is not implementable then we should change the spec.
This issue is non-breaking so it doesn't qualify as a P1.

Hi everyone!
I have same problem.
When I watch some youtube movies, Gpu Temps/Coreclock/MemClock are a max of the available score.
The movies are ordinary movies and streaming lives both.

I use the new profiles on firefox 48.0.2 32/64bit.
I launch firefox and go to youtube. I watch some movie.
Example URL:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y60wDzZt8yg (streaming live)
I use to check Gpu Temps/Coreclock/MemClock by TechPowerUP GPU-Z 1.10.0.

And I try other browsers, I got same results.
High temps and clocks behavior occurs only firefox, do not occurs chrome and edge.

Judging results, I think this cause is following mime type.
Mime Type:video/mp4; codecs="avc1.4d401f"

Otherwise the movie which is used following mine type makes low GPU clocks.
Mime Type:video/webm; codecs="vp9"

Which is more stressful by watching youtube movies on 32bit firefox or 64bit firefox?
I try it, I suppose using 32bit firefox is low utilization.
On 64bit firefox, Coreclock/MemClock are top on full movie time.
On 32bit firefox, Coreclock/MemClock are sometimes top not full time.

Best Regards,

OS:Windows10 64bit

Hi everyone!
I find to solve those bugs.
It is not using dxva by d3d11.

This following preference is true by default on my firefox.
I change from true to false in about:config.
"media.windows-media-foundation.allow-d3d11-dxva"

I set this, Gpu Temps/Coreclock/MemClock became sometimes maximum of available scores.
But still, playing movie on firefox is much hotter than others.
Latest setting is caused.

i can confirm that alia_1988@hotmail.co.uk initial reported behavior(high gpu clock state during plaback of youtube live streaming content) still persists in firefox version 53.0.3 with nvidia gtx 1070 gpu.

the proposed fix from m3251529904 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1263809#c34 does not affect/solve the the high gpu clock.

this issue is still persists in firefox 54, when playing any youtube live stream, the GPU will stuck at max clock/frequency.

* it did not happen with every video, but only youtube live stream.
still no bug fix for this issue?

issue like this really discourage people from using firefox.

Hi Alexandru,

Thanks for reporting these issues to us, we have a bug tracking the MPC issue, as well as the FireFox issue and the stutter introduced with the latest driver branch and Windows update.

At this time there are no fixes for any of these issues.

I experienced the same issue that OP described. High gpu usage (almost stuck at max core/memory clock) and high temperature while watching live stream (in my case 1080p 60 fps video). I see even in normal 1080p video (not live)that for first 15-20second my gpu reach its max core and memory clock. This not happend in chrome. My specs are: ryzen 1600, asrock ab350m pro4, 8gb RAM, nvidia gtx 1060. I'm on windows 10 1803(build 17134.112) with 388.11 nvidia driver.
Let me know if log or more infos are needed.

Still occurs with FF 89.

Everything is normal while the stream is running. But when you scroll back in the stream, and the stream ends at the source, the CPU and GPU load goes way up. Then even closing the tab with the video player does not bring the load back down. It seems some background process is causing all the load. You have to close FF completely to get the load down to normal.

Hey Michael,
Does this issue still reproduce for you?

Flags: needinfo?(bugzzilla)

I can't tell. I've upgraded the computer, with a new GPU and drivers, and I have not watched a longer livestream for a while.

Still occurs with FF 102. The new CPU is not loaded so much, but still something inside FF gets locked up, and you even can not load another URL in another tab. You have to restart FF to get back to normal.
